Advice of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani to Those Facing Hardship

Life in this world is an ever-revolving cycle of trials. While there are moments of ease and abundance, a servant is frequently tested with hardship, poverty, and overwhelming distress. During such dark periods, the human spirit can easily waver, sink into sorrow, or fall into negative assumptions about the Almighty.

In his legendary spiritual masterpiece, Futuh Al-Ghaib (The Revelations of the Unseen), the great scholar and master of spiritual wayfarers, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani (rahimahullah), offers profound, tender, and deeply monotheistic advice for those navigating the stormy seas of worldly adversity.

Below is an insightful reflection on Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani’s golden counsel for anyone seeking inner peace amidst life’s struggles.

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani opens his counsel with a firm yet compassionate warning to the poor and distressed: never complain or blame Allah for your earthly condition.

“Do not say, O unfortunate one! Never say that Allah has made you poor, turned the world away from you, humiliated you, or neglected to suffice you in this life…”

It is human nature to compare one’s status with others. One might see how God bestows wealth, status, and ease upon others day and night, even though both share the same faith, worship the same Lord, and descend from the same common ancestors, Adam and Eve. Yet, Sheikh Abdul Qadir cautions believers against entertaining ill thoughts (su’uzhan) toward their Creator.

Why does Allah test a faithful believer with hardship and poverty? Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani explains the inner spiritual wisdom in poetic prose:

“Indeed, Allah has treated you thus because your innate nature (fitrah) is pure, and the cooling breeze of divine mercy continuously showers upon you in the form of patience, contentment (ridha), and spiritual gnosis (ma’rifah). The light of faith and monotheism shines upon you, strengthening the roots, seeds, branches, and fruits of your tree of faith until its shade spreads far and wide.”

Hardship for a believer is not a sign of divine anger, but a form of Divine refinement. Allah purifies the soul from pride, arrogance, and worldly attachment (hubbud dunya). Through the fire of adversity, Allah shapes the believer’s spirit to become resilient, deeply rooted in patience, and steadfast in faith.

A major source of human anxiety is excessive worry over daily sustenance (rizq) and envy toward others’ success. Regarding this, Sheikh Abdul Qadir establishes a timeless spiritual rule:

  1. What is decreed for you: It will inevitably reach you, and you will be led toward it, so that your meeting with your allocated sustenance is guaranteed at the exact appointed time.
  2. What is not decreed for you: You will be kept away from it, and it will be kept away from you, so that you and it shall never meet.

Therefore, he advises:

“Do not be greedy for what is destined for you, nor be anxious about it. And do not feel regret over what was intended for someone else.”

Regarding the prohibition of envying the material grandeur of others and the virtue of contentment (qana’ah), Allah SWT states in the Holy Qur’an:

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ

Translation: “And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them, [it being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.” (QS. Taha [20]: 131)

Worldly luxury given to others is often a trial (fitnah). In contrast, peace of mind, contentment with divine destiny, and the rewards of the Hereafter are far more noble and lasting.

For those who remain patient and content, Allah promises an unimaginable reward:

فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

Translation: “And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.” (QS. As-Sajdah [32]: 17)

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani’s counsel in Futuh Al-Ghaib provides a serene spiritual sanctuary for anyone facing adversity:

  1. Purify Your Thoughts: Realize that hardship is not humiliation, but a means of spiritual elevation.
  2. Embrace Contentment (Ridha): Surrendering with peace of heart to God’s decree attracts divine grace.
  3. Focus on Devotion: No act is more beloved to Allah than fulfilling worship, avoiding sin, and remaining content with your divine portion.

May Allah grant us tranquility of heart, strength of faith, and divine contentment in every decree. Âmîn.
