Maintaining Family Ties: A Bridge of Love and Key to Abundant Sustenance

Humans are created as social beings who cannot live entirely on their own. We need each other to complement and support one another in times of need. In Islam, these social interactions are beautifully guided through the concept of silaturahmi—specifically maintaining family ties and fostering love among relatives. Silaturahmi is not just exchanging polite greetings; it is a sincere expression of care to support, help, and maintain harmony among relatives.

Maintaining family ties is a religious duty that brings immense blessings. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated that keeping family bonds is a primary cause for expanding one’s sustenance and prolonging one’s lifespan with blessings.

He said:

مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُبْسَطَ لَهُ فِي رِزْقِهِ، وَيُنْسَأَ لَهُ فِي أَثَرِهِ، فَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ

Meaning: “Whoever loves that his sustenance be expanded and his lifespan be prolonged, let him keep family ties.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Conversely, Islam gives a stern warning to those who intentionally break off relations:

لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَاطِعٌ

Meaning: “The one who cuts (family ties) will not enter Paradise.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Guarding family connections brings broad positive impacts on both personal and social dimensions of life:

  1. Expanding Sustenance: Healthy interactions with relatives often open doors to cooperation, financial assistance, or ease in business affairs.
  2. Blessings in Lifespan: A prolonged lifespan in the context of the hadith is interpreted by scholars as a life full of blessings, utility, and a good legacy that remains even after death.
  3. Attaining Allah’s Mercy: Allah loves those who spread compassion. Fostering family ties connects us directly with the mercy of Allah SWT.
  4. Peace of Mind: Staying in harmony with family members protects us from the stress and exhausting conflicts of family estrangement.

Rebuilding family ties sometimes requires a great deal of humility, especially when relationships have been strained by misunderstandings. However, as believers seeking the pleasure of Allah and abundant blessings, we must take the first step to reconcile. True silaturahmi is not merely returning the kindness of those who are good to us, but reconnecting with relatives who have drifted away or become distant.
