The Virtue of Charity: An Eternal Investment That Purifies Wealth

Introduction
Many people mistakenly believe that by sharing their wealth with others, their overall riches will decrease. This view is a significant error. In the eyes of faith, giving or spending in charity (sadaqah) is actually the best way to grow and purify one’s wealth. Charity not only provides essential social support for the receiver but also guarantees security and peace of mind for the giver.
Scriptural Proofs on the Virtue of Charity
Allah SWT describes charity as a fertile seed that yields abundant stalks of goodness. He says in the Holy Qur’an:
مَّثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِي كُلِّ سُنبُلَةٍ مِّائَةُ حَبَّةٍ
Meaning: “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 261)
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reinforced this with his oath that giving in charity does not reduce one’s wealth in the slightest:
مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ
Meaning: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Narrated by Muslim)
Wisdom and Benefits of Giving Charity
Behind the encouragement to give charity lie vast spiritual and humanitarian wisdoms:
- Expiation of Sins: Sincere charity cools the anger of Allah SWT and expiates sins, just as water extinguishes fire.
- Purifying Soul and Wealth: Sadaqah cleanses the heart from greed, extreme love for worldly life, and purifies our assets from the rights of the weak that have not been delivered.
- Shade on the Day of Judgment: The wealth we give in charity will act as a protective canopy shading us on the Day of Resurrection, when the sun is brought close and there is no other shade.
- Opening New Doors of Sustenance: Allah promises to replace whatever His servants spend with something far better and more blessed.
Conclusion
Charity is not about how large of an amount we give, but rather about the sincerity of the heart and our care for one another. The true wealth we possess is not what we store and enjoy in this life, but what we send ahead through charity as our eternal provisions in the hereafter. Let us build a habit of giving charity, no matter how small, to purify our wealth and souls.
