Behind the Blessings We Receive

Reflections on Sustenance
Every blessing we receive is often connected to someone else’s livelihood. When we spend money at the market, for example, part of that blessing becomes the means by which a trader provides for his family.
Behind a large shopping trip, there may be a merchant hoping to pay a child’s school fees. Behind an ordinary transaction, there may be another household quietly sustained by it.
Behind a damaged motorbike or car, there is a repairman’s fortune to buy food for his family.
Behind the ATM with the balance, there are the salaries of bank employees, who always smile to serve us when we go to the bank.
Behind our wallets when we pay at the supermarket, there is the fortune of an employee who is waiting to be paid to buy milk for his child.
Behind our fortune in buying ready-to-eat food to satisfy our hunger, there is the fortune of those who hope for it every day.
Behind our sustenance to repair the house to make it better, there is the sustenance of the builders to meet the needs of their children and wives at home.
Behind our fortune in repairing a punctured tire, there is the fortune of a patchworker who always hopes and looks for halal sustenance.
Interconnection of Human Livelihoods
Behind our sustenance is someone else’s sustenance. Not because of our great efforts or abilities, but Allah’s way of providing sustenance is extraordinary and will definitely not be out of reach from our minds.
What we enjoy should be our sustenance, and what we give is the sustenance of other people that Allah has entrusted through us.
Let us not be sad when something happens and instead spend a little more of the sustenance that Allah has given us. Widen and broaden our minds and hearts, knowing that it is someone else’s sustenance that Allah has entrusted to us.
