10 Signs of Weak Faith

In Islamic theology, we firmly believe that faith (Iman) is volatile—it increases (yaziid) and decreases (yanqush). It grows stronger with obedience and righteous deeds, and conversely, it weakens with disobedience, negligence, and sins.

The weakening of faith does not happen suddenly without symptoms. There are clear signs when a person’s spiritual condition is declining. Recognizing these signs of weak faith is vital for every Muslim as a means of daily self-reflection (muhasabah) so that we can immediately correct ourselves before our faith deteriorates further.

Here are 10 signs of weak faith that we must watch out for:

The most visible sign of weakening faith is the emergence of extreme laziness in performing acts of worship. Obedience feels like a heavy burden, and even when performed, it is done hastily without focus or humility (khusyuk).

Allah SWT describes this spiritual laziness as one of the characteristics of the hypocrites in the Qur’an:

Meaning: “And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily…” (QS. An-Nisa’: 142)

A person with weakening faith tends to underestimate voluntary deeds (nafilah), delays obligatory prayers without valid excuses, and is sluggish in attending Friday prayers. The Prophet SAW warned:

Meaning: “People will continue to hold back from the first row until Allah holds them back in the Fire.” (HR. Abu Daud)

When faith weakens, the soul’s defense fortress crumbles. As a result, small sins are taken lightly, and disobedience is committed without guilt. If left unchecked, these sins become habits, to the point where the perpetrator dares to commit sins openly without shame.

The Prophet SAW said:

Meaning: “All of my Ummah will be forgiven except those who commit sins openly (al-mujahirin)…” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

The extinguishing of religious zeal (ghirah) in the chest is a clear sign of weak faith. A person with fragile faith remains indifferent when witnessing evils or violations of Sharia. There is no dislike in their heart, let alone an effort to change it.

The Prophet SAW explained:

Meaning: “If a sin is committed on earth, the one who witnesses it and hates (or denounces) it is like one who was absent from it. And the one who was absent from it but approved of it is like one who witnessed it.” (HR. Abu Daud)

Another sign of weak faith is when someone always looks for the minimum legal threshold. They constantly ask, “Is this act sinful or not? Is it haram or just makruh?”

Trivializing makruh and gray (syubhat) areas will eventually drag a person into forbidden territory. The Prophet SAW likened this to a shepherd near a private pasture:

Meaning: “Like a shepherd who grazes his flock around a private pasture, nearly grazing in it…” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

The companion Ibn Mas’ud radhiyallahu ‘anhu illustrated how believers and wrongdoers view sins differently:

Meaning: “Indeed, the believer sees his sins as if he were sitting beneath a mountain which he fears will fall upon him. While the wicked person sees his sins as a fly that passes over his nose…” (HR. Bukhari)

A decline in faith directly correlates with the loss of inner peace. The chest frequently feels tight, one becomes easily anxious over trivial matters, quick-tempered, and their character (akhlaq) toward others begins to degrade. True faith, however, brings ease.

The Prophet SAW said:

Meaning: “Iman is patience and tolerance (magnanimity).” (Silsilah al-Ahadits ash-Shahihah)

The Qur’an and dhikr are essential food for the soul. When faith weakens, a person loses their appetite for this spiritual nourishment. The Qur’an lies covered in dust, untouched for weeks, and the tongue becomes dry from remembering Allah. The heart hardens like a stone due to its distance from His remembrance.

The growth of an intense craving for human praise, popularity, and authority without fear of Allah is a symptom of weak faith. A soul devoid of sincerity will always seek nourishment from the validation of creation.

The Prophet SAW gave a stern warning about the ambition for leadership:

Meaning: “Indeed, you will be greedy for authority, and it will be a cause of regret on the Day of Resurrection…” (HR. Bukhari)

A believer with healthy faith shares the pain of their brothers and sisters. If our hearts are unaffected, indifferent, and we refuse to even pray for Muslims who are suffering from disasters or oppression around the world (such as the Uyghurs, Palestinians, or Syrians), our faith is in a critical condition.

The Prophet SAW said:

Meaning: “Indeed, the believer’s position among the people of faith is like the position of the head on the body; the believer feels pain for the people of faith just as the body feels pain from an ailment in the head.” (HR. Ahmad)

A person with weak faith tends to be spiritually and materially selfish. They are busy hoarding wealth for personal gratification but have no desire to dedicate their time, energy, intellect, or wealth to the benefit of Islamic da’wah and the community.

This contrasts sharply with the Sahabah, such as Tsumamah bin Atsal, who immediately declared an economic embargo to defend the da’wah of the Prophet SAW right after entering Islam.

The final sign of weak faith is drowning in a consumerist and luxurious lifestyle. One’s entire life focus is spent worrying about gourmet foods, branded clothing, expensive vehicles, and extravagant housing.

When sending Mu’adh bin Jabal to Yemen, the Prophet SAW advised:

Meaning: “Avoid luxury, for the servants of Allah do not live in luxury!” (HR. Ahmad)

Iman is the most precious asset we possess in this life. By recognizing these signs of spiritual weakness, let us perform a spiritual audit on ourselves. If we find these signs within us, let us immediately repent, tighten our worship, increase our dhikr, and ask Allah SWT to constantly renew the faith in our chests.
